Curatorial residency in Valletta, Malta

In 2014 Mare van Koningsveld and I responded to an open call for emerging Dutch curators. The call was initiated by V.18, Valletta European Capital of Culture 2018. In the end two Dutch curators would get the opportunity to visit Valletta (Malta) in 2014. Luckily, Mare & I were invited (as a team) as well. The other Dutch curator that got an invitation was Suzanne Wallinga. From 24th of August till 12th of September 2014 the three of us were in Malta, as part of the so called curatorial school. In Valletta we were introduced to local artists and got in tocuh with local directors and curators. We also gave a presentation about our curatorial practise and became part of the jury of the Divergent Thinkers program in BLITZ. One of the artists that participated in the Divergent Thinkers exhibition won a residency in USA, and an exhibition in Valletta afterwards. Kristina Borg was the lucky one.

After the residency, Mare & I had to come up with a proposal for a project that could be realized in Malta in September 2015. In the beginning of December 2014, we sent our proposal to V.18. Suzanne Wallinga also had to come up with a proposal. In the end only one of the project proposals would be executed. In January 2015 we heard that the jury had decided to select the proposal by Mare & me.

Suzanne Wallinga and Mare van Koningsveld & I also got interviewed by Maltese newspaper Malta Today about our stay in Malta and our practise as independent curators.
