POPVIEW + LEX VAN ROSSEN AWARD
Curators + initiators: Lennard Dost & Floor Boogaart
Mare van Koningsveld & Philippus Zandstra were also part of the organisation/curators of Popview + Lex van Rossen Award editie 2009.

Background
It’s getting more and more difficult for music photographers. At concerts they often are only allowed to take photos during the first couple of songs. There’s almost no space left in newspapers for their photos. To help out music photographers, in 2007 Floor Boogaart and I created the Lex van Rossen Award, an annual award for young, European music photographers (under 35 years of age). The award was named after the late Lex van Rossen, a famous Dutch music photographer who unfortunately died shortly before and whose photos were published in newspapers and magazines like NRC Handelsblad, Haarlems Dagblad and OOR. The winner of the award got an amount of money (2500 euros), and his/her work could be seen at the annual Popview exhibition, that included the work of other nominees as well.

Dennis Duijnhouwer: Popular Work
At the same time the Popview 2010 exhibition could be seen upstairs at Noorderlicht Photo Gallery, in the cellars of the gallery, there was the exhibition of Dutch music photographer Dennis Duijnhouwer, on invitation of Popview. Duinhouwer, who was nominated for the Lex van Rossen Award in 2008, exhibited photos taken between 2005-2010. In his exhibition, he wondered what music photography actually is.

“I’m sure if I take photos of a DJ playing or a band performing that this counts as music photograhy. But what if I take photos of girls smoking a cigarette in the smoking area of a pop venue during a concert, or if I take a photo of my best friend, that also plays in a band, or if I take a photo of a toilet in a night club…does that count as music photography as well?”, Duijnhouwer wondered.

Popview 2010 and Dennis Duijnhouwer: Popular Work were opened by Annie Hoogendoorn on the 14th of January 2010. As an extra we organised a portfolio review with Dennis Duijnhouwer at Noorderlicht Photo Gallery. Duijnhouwer commented on the portfolios of young photographers, came up with good advice, and gave a private tour through his exhibition. Participation in the portfolio review was free. People whom were interested, could send us an email. Together with Duijnhouwer, we made a selection out of the applications. The portfolio review could be attended by 10 photographers.
